If you are a recruiter using cadence and sequencing, what is the optimal number of touches?
The consensus on the “total number of touches” in a successful recruiter outreach sequence often falls within a relatively tight range, though the optimal number can vary based on the channel (email vs. multi-channel) and the seniority of the candidate.
Based on industry data and best practices, 4 to 7 touches is the most commonly cited sweet spot for a high-performing recruitment email outreach sequence. The number is higher for omni/multi-channel.
The 4-Touch Email Sequence: Data from platforms analyzing millions of outreach sequences often shows that a 4-stage sequence captures the vast majority (around 90%) of possible replies, with anything beyond a fifth stage yielding little to no additional benefit. This often includes an initial message and three follow-ups, with the final one being a “break-up” email.

Touches add up quickly. If you space out 4 emails, 2 calls/voicemails, 1 DM, 1 comment on a post, 1 profile view you’re already at 9. I am seeing some literature has 7-12 touches for omni-channel outreach. Also, in the sales conversations on touches, there is the concept of stacking the touches very close together, which apparently has more impact. Sounds like a good place to start the next post!
