We talk a lot about the need for human oversight—the “human-in-the-loop”—as the critical safeguard against algorithmic discrimination. But this data suggests that once the AI produces a seemingly efficient answer, recruiters suffer from a form of “automation complacency,” deferring to the technology even when they know it’s wrong. This isn’t just an operational failure; it’s a massive legal and ethical risk. Your human oversight isn’t the safety net you think it is; it’s potentially an accelerant for biased hiring.
What should we do? We need to move beyond simple “oversight” and focus on auditability and accountability. You must require your AI tools to be transparent about why a candidate was rejected, and you must train your TA team to treat the AI’s output as a hypothesis to be tested, not an instruction to be followed.
